چکیده

We describe recent progress in developing a superfluid helium analog of the superconducting dc-SQUID. The devices tested thus far are sensitive detectors of rotation as well as useful probes for studies of superfluidity. The key ingredients of the superfluid helium quantum interference device (SHeQUID) involve commercially available technology and modest cryogenic facilities. The superfluid states of quantum liquids (He-B and He) are described by a macroscopic order parameter of the form Ψ = ρs e iφ , where ρs is the superfluid density and φ is the quantum mechanical phase [1]. When two such fluids are coupled together through a small channel, the system exhibits many surprising features. Quintessential phenomena are various Josephson effects, which occur when the channel between the two fluids is sufficiently small. Such a small channel is normally referred to as a weak link or junction. In that scenario, solving the time-dependent Schrodinger’s equation applied to the coupled system results in two governing equations: I = I0 sinΔφ (1)

Superfluid helium quantum interference devices

We present an overview of recent developments related to superfluid helium quantum interference devices (SHeQUIDs). We discuss the physics of two reservoirs of superfluid helium coupled together and describe the quantum oscillations that result from varying the coupling strength. We explain the principles behind SHeQUIDs that can be built based on these oscillations and review some techniques a...

Superfluid helium quantum interference devices: present status and future prospects

The development of superfluid weak links has led both to the discovery of new physical phenomena and also to the development of superfluid helium quantum interference devices (SHeQUIDs). We describe the physics underlying the SHeQUID and present a brief overview of the current state of this promising technology. Superfluid 4He and 3He are described by the Landau two fluid model [1] augmented by...

Superfluid Helium-4 Weak Link Experiments with Nanoscale Aperture Arrays

Arrays of nanoscale apertures on thin (~ 60 nm) silicon nitride membranes have been discovered to exhibit the characteristic signatures of so-called Josephson weak links in superfluid helium-4 (4He) [1]. These devices can be used to detect quantum phase differences in a matter wave interferometer made with two weak-links in a loop [2]. We summarize here our recent [3] observation of quantum int...

Superfluid He Quantum Interference Grating

We report the first observation of quantum interference from a grating structure consisting of four weak link junctions in superfluid He. We find that an interference grating can be implemented successfully in a superfluid matter wave interferometer to enhance its sensitivity while trading away some of its dynamic range. We also show that this type of device can be used to measure absolute quan...
